About

Hello there, thanks for popping by. I’m Karoline, a Norwegian photographer & journalist, living in Oslo & working a bit here and a bit there, most preferably everywhere. These days I spend a lot of time with Riitta Ikonen working on our two collaborative projects Eyes as Big as Plates and Time is a ship that never casts anchor. I am also working on a new series of portraits and monologues documenting online daters (in progress), much in the style of my recent book Mormormonologene. Listen to one of them right here.

Love, love, love your photo of the old woman with the twig hat, part of your eyes as big as plates show. I’d love to hear how you got her to pose for it and what she thought of the photo. So inventive and lovely. Such few whimsical photos of elderly women. Just lovely. thank you!

      Dear Karin,

Thank you so much for those warming words and great to hear you are a fan of Agnes too! (So am I and my great Eyes as Big as Plates collaborator Riitta Ikonen).

Agnes lives on the South Western tip of Norway (where the image was shot), she parachuted for the first time when she was 85, and then again when she turned 90, she was not afraid of anything but one thing, being blown off and out at sea (since she was 1.5 m tall…) – so we thought she would be perfect in the mindset of the north wind, which is the thematic inspiration behind this image. All three of us really enjoyed the day out, the company and the outcome in the end. She was also one of my subjects in a book I just published about Norwegian women all above the age of 80, called Mormormonologene (since you mentioned your concern for photo projects about elderly women, perhaps you find that ineresting. Sadly the book is in Norwegian only, but there is a website with soundslides and subtitles here: http://www.mormormonologues.com and another blog about that project here: http://mormormonologues.wordpress.com/

Wishing you a lovely weekend, and thanks again for your nice feedback!

      Karoline.

    Hello, Karoline,

I am very moved by your picture of the old woman with twigs on her head and am wondering if a copy of that picture is for sale, and if so, how much it would be.

The old lady reminds me of my own grandmother:)

    Thank you.

      Dear Marja,

Thank you so much for your lovely comment and so sorry to reply to you so late! I am not the best at checking in to the comments section, but I shall make my utmost to change in that field…And great to hear that you like Agnes, she’s one of me and Riitta’s (my ‘other half’ in the Eyes as Big as Plates project) absolute favourite too! If your grandmother is anything like Agnes – first of all you’re very lucky, secondly we’d love to meet her🙂

  6. really love the picture of the lady in the twig hat; it was featured in the UK as a positive representation of older people. Ever since I first saw it, I have thought about it a lot and wondered if it is possible to obtain a digital copy of the photo so that I could make a print for one of the nursing homes which our charity runs.

    Thanks you

    Helen

Dear Helen, Thank you so much for your lovely comment and sorry to reply to you so late – Riitta and I are not checking in on the comments field so often, and end up missing wonderful feedback like yours – but great to hear that you enjoyed Agnes, she’s one of our absolute favourite human beings! Unfortunately we don’t give away digital versions of our work, but we are hoping to make some more postcards (we had a whole stack of them with Agnes as the cover girl), and would love to send you an Agnes postcard if you would send us your address? All the works are for sale as well, we would be happy to send you some prices if that is of interest.

Wishing you a wonderful August, best wishes from Riitta and Karoline.

  7. Kjøpte Mormormonologene i 30-årsgave til meg selv. Utrolig fin. Leser litt hver kveld. Takk!

Hei Caroline!

    • karolinehjorth

      Hei Mina,

Beklager tidenes treigeste svar!

  9. Debora Price

Hi Karoline, I saw one of your stunning images on Facebook and thought you might be interested in a current photo competition “Ageing: The Bigger Picture” sponsored by the British Sociey of Gerontology on the Photocrowd Platform. There is substantial prize money and the aim is to stimulate thinking and reflection on our ageing world. The link is here if you are interested: https://www.photocrowd.com/challenges/374-ageing-bigger-picture/ . With best wishes, Debbie

    • karolinehjorth

      Hi Debbie,

Thank you very much for your lovely feedback and for the Photocrowd / British Society of Gerontology competition. We will definitely have a look at it and perhaps even try our luck, as we are in the process of financing our upcoming Eyes as Big as Plates book!

Warmest greetings from Karoline and Riitta
